Weight matters. A standard wood pallet weighs 40-50 lbs. Over a truckload of 20 pallets, that's 800-1,000 lbs of pallet weight. The pallet-product fit is often overlooked. Products that overhang the pallet edge are prone to damage and can't be efficiently stacked or racked. Products that leave excess empty space on the pallet waste trailer capacity. Taking the time to match your pallet size to your product dimensions can yield surprising savings.
For businesses shipping internationally, pallet choice has additional cost implications. Non-ISPM 15 compliant pallets will be refused at customs, resulting in delays and repalletizing charges that can run $5-15 per pallet at destination. Using pre-certified pallets from the start eliminates this risk entirely.
Recycled pallets offer a double cost advantage: lower purchase price and equivalent performance. A Grade A recycled pallet costs $4-8 compared to $10-20 for new, with identical weight and dimensional specs. The freight cost is the same either way — so why pay more for the pallet underneath your product?
