Choosing Between Stringer and Block Pallets

The two main construction styles have distinct advantages. Here's a practical guide to picking the right one.

Stringer and block pallets represent two fundamentally different construction philosophies. Understanding the difference helps you make the right choice for your specific application — and can save you money, improve handling efficiency, and prevent damage.

Stringer pallets use long boards (stringers) running between deck boards. They're lighter, cheaper, and easier to repair. They provide two-way forklift entry (four-way if notched). They're the dominant design in North America, accounting for approximately 80% of all pallets in circulation.

Block pallets use solid wood blocks between deck boards, creating a sturdier structure. They're heavier, stronger, and provide true four-way forklift entry without notching. They're the international standard (the EUR pallet is a block pallet) and preferred for automated handling systems where consistent entry from all four sides is essential.

The structural differences are meaningful. Stringer pallets concentrate load-bearing along two or three parallel stringers. Block pallets distribute weight across nine or more blocks, creating a more even load distribution. For heavy loads (3,000+ lbs), block pallets generally offer a higher safety margin.

Choose stringer pallets when: cost is a primary concern (they're 15-30% cheaper than equivalent block pallets), you ship domestically, your loads are under 3,000 lbs, you need easy repairability (stringer repair is simpler and cheaper), and your handling equipment is standard forklift or pallet jack.

Choose block pallets when: you need four-way forklift access (essential for tight warehouse aisles and cross-docking operations), you ship internationally (block pallets are the global standard), your loads are heavy, you use automated warehouse systems that require consistent dimensions and four-way compatibility, or your customers specifically request block pallets.

Automated systems deserve special attention. AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems), conveyor systems, and robotic handlers often require block pallets for reliable operation. The consistent dimensions and four-way access of block pallets prevent the jams, misfeeds, and positioning errors that can occur with stringer pallets in automated environments.

Repairability differs significantly between the two types. Stringer pallets are easier and cheaper to repair — replacing a deck board requires only pulling the damaged board and nailing in a new one. Block pallet repair is more complex because the blocks themselves can be damaged and are harder to replace. This affects total cost of ownership over the pallet's lifecycle.

Many businesses use both types depending on the application. Stringers for general domestic shipping, blocks for export and high-value or heavy loads. The key is matching the pallet to the job rather than defaulting to one type for everything.

Not sure which type your operation needs? We stock both stringer and block pallets in multiple sizes and grades. We can evaluate your specific handling requirements, load characteristics, and shipping destinations to recommend the optimal choice — or the right mix of both.
